Principal's Message

Ms. Karen Slate

Dear New Beginnings Families,

Welcome, Welcome, Welcome Back to the New 2021-22 School Year! To our new parents and students, I am excited and humbled to have you as a part of the New Beginnings Learning Academy family.  To our returning parents and students, it is with pleasure that I look forward to seeing your beautiful faces and as we resume a new school year at NBLA, Dolton School District 149. Together with ALL stakeholders (students, staff, parents and community members), we will strive to work hard to strengthen NBLA’s status as a unique, rigorous, and delightful learning environment as we return to full in-person instruction. We were faced with challenges last year and many changes this year during COVID 19; however, WE will not be defeated by anything that is trying to interfere with the education of our youth!

Summer has now come and gone and now we are delighted to inform you that we enjoyed a wonderful in person summer program without incident. The staff of NBLA anticipates welcoming back our students for in person learning. Please know that the health and safety of our students, families, and educators remain our priority. I would like to highlight a few points from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Illinois Department of Public Health below:

  • Illinois government has mandated masking indoors at K-12 schools; this will be done universally among teachers, staff, students and visitors to school regardless of vaccination status.
  • NBLA will practice social distancing in our classrooms, lunchrooms, hallways, and throughout our building.
  • Masking Daily is entirely required on buses and school-related transportation.

Parents visit The Science Behind COVID-19: Parent FAQs (American Academy of Pediatrics) to learn more about COVID-19.

Our “Extended New Normal” for NBLA in Dolton School District #149 is to modify and make changes to our building facility (classroom, lunchroom, bathrooms, handwashing, etc…) via signage guidelines according to the policies and procedures mandated by the Illinois Government and the District.

Our mission at New Beginnings Learning Academy is to provide a nurturing, safe, orderly, and engaging instructional experience for every child in which they will grow and learn to become successful members of the community. The demands and complexities of educating children are increasing day by day, therefore it is evident and pertinent that we work together to develop their young minds to ensure that they reach their full potential and become productive citizens of society. Accountability with a continuing focus of Purpose, Practice, and Performance!”  We Believe…that WE will not be defeated during this difficult time, therefore we will continue to challenge our students to grow in their academic abilities and be 21st Century College and Career ready for their future.

Our teachers are committed to forming positive relationships with your children, so they can engage each child in full in-person learning.  Please be assured that although instruction is provided in a different format, every staff member will work tirelessly to meet the needs of every student.

As an educational family, We Believe with your assistance and cooperation we will be able to move forward to continue to attain the highest level of success. The gifts and talents that our students display, combined with the dedication and passions of our teachers, allow us to strive for excellence. By working together, students, parents/guardians, and staff can make New Beginnings Learning Academy an enjoyable and great place to learn! Hence, we are dedicated this year to continue with this new platform of WE are “Moving Students Forwardat NBLA, Dream Big … A Rainbow of Possibilities. As students, parents, and teachers work together, we will support one another during this phase of remote learning.  Our bonds will become stronger and we will provide a positive experience for all families. If WE can continue to strive for excellence and work together as an extended family, we can change the mindset and continue to progress in the right direction for success. Therefore, we invite you to join us in this mission of empowering our children for this upcoming school year!

In an effort to move in the right direction for student learning, the 2021-22 First Day of School is Monday, August 30, 2020, (half day) starting at 9:00 AM and ending at 12:00 noon.   The First Full Day of School is August 31, 2020 ending at 3:30 pm. It is with great expectation that all students begin the year with most importantly MASK,  uniforms, a big smile, a great attitude and behavior, dreams and goals and the intent to be prepared to put their best feet forward!   The continued support of All Team members is essential to ensuring we have on-going success with our goal of academic growth for every student.  Please Remember, “It Takes a Village…and WE are “Moving Students Forward!”

We are pleased to inform you that Dolton School District 149 will continue the implementation of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), an option available to schools participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs, for the 2021-2022 school year. Schools that participate in CEP are able to provide healthy breakfasts and lunches each day at no charge for all students enrolled in that CEP school. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!
