Message Regarding Student Safety in all Schools

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Board of Education’s number one priority is student safety. At the August 23rd Board meeting, the Board of Education focused on increasing the number of security officers in all schools and spoke of changes this school year restricting visitors from walking into the schools without having a set appointment. They also voted to approve the purchase and installation of metal detectors in all elementary schools due to the increasing number of school shootings across the country.

All parents and visitors that enter school grounds are required to report to the building Principal’s office and receive permission to remain on school property in an effort to minimize safety concerns. Additionally, any parent or visitor that wishes to confer with a District staff member must have an appointment to enter the school. Visitors must also walk through metal detectors in an effort to protect our children. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals who have legitimate medical concerns on a case-by-case basis. All schools will continue to conduct background checks on school personnel and volunteers.

The Board of Education has worked diligently to put together a plan to ensure the safety of all students. On November 7, 2018, metal detectors for all elementary schools have been installed to improve the safety of all students and staff. Handheld wands will only be used for students in cases of reasonable suspicion.

Random Metal Detector Searches in school systems must deal with the risk of violence, including the use of weapons on or adjacent to school campuses. The purpose of this program is to deter the bringing of weapons such as guns, knives, or any other item, which might cause harm or injury to any human being on our campuses.
