Superintendent's Corner

Welcome Back to School

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the Board of Education for Dolton School District 149, Staff, Administrators and Teachers we are excited about the opening of the 2015-2016 school year and look forward to opening the doors on Monday August 24, 2015 for the first full day of school for all students. All students must be in full uniform Monday through Friday. In order for all children to be successful in school they need the full support of home and school working collaboratively together as partners.  We look forward to your partnership and support as we work to assist your child(ren) in reaching his or her fullest potential.

New Student Registration is scheduled for Wednesday, August 5th-Friday, August 7th from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. Effective the week of August 10th new student registration will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

The Terra Nova pre-tests were taken in September of 2014 and the post tests were taken again in January of 2015.  The district administrative team worked with Dr. Kathleen Hickey Professor at Governor State University to analyze the data to see how our children performed in each grade and subject area in all schools. Students were tested in reading, language, and mathematics in 2nd-8th grades.  The data results will serve as a tool for assisting our principals in the school improvement process and will afford us many opportunities to plan meaningful and purposive professional development opportunities throughout the 2015-2016 school year.  Click Here to View the Terra Nova Data Analysis. It is our goal to compare Terra Nova results with PARCC and look for similar patterns and trends to improve student performance.

Please join us for our Annual Back to School Carnival and Health Fair in conjunction with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated Zeta-Zeta Chapter out of Dolton, Illinois on Saturday, August 29, 2015 from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. at Caroline Sibley School located at 1550 Sibley Blvd., in Calumet City, Illinois "Let’s Get Fit 3 in 2015."  Bring the whole family out to participate in heart, blood pressure, diabetes and dental screenings. Food, fun and fitness all in one along with a chance to win some great raffle prizes.

This school year the State of Illinois will hold us accountable for student growth.  With this being said, our Joint Committee will need to reconvene in an effort to ensure all certified teachers understand the expectations of PERA, Sec. 24A-5(c) and our growth model. By September 1, all teachers will begin using Teachscape, a new teacher evaluation instrument that is designed to help ensure evaluations are effective and efficient and lead to sustained improvement in teaching practice.

We will also continue to provide professional development for teachers, paraprofessionals, support staff, and administrators with an emphasis on improving student learning and programs.  In addition, we will work diligently to create professional learning communities, refine our school improvement teams and work with the board of education to establish our annual district wide committees.

It is our hope and expectation that everyone will work more closely together to ensure the board vision and mission are carried out to improve teaching and learning for all children.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve as the district superintendent.  I look forward to working with every parent and every stakeholder to help each child reach academic success!

Educationally yours,
Shelly Davis-Jones, Ed.D.
