Principal's Message

Dr. Nicole Robinson

August 2018

Dear S.T.E.M. Academy Families,

My name is Dr. Nicole Robinson and I am very excited to introduce myself as the new principal of S.T.E.M. Academy. I am honored to have been selected to join the Dolton 149 School District, which is known for its dedication to education, but more importantly, to children. I am a proud alumnus of the district. I attended Caroline Sibley and graduated from the former Dirksen Middle School. I come to you with experience spanning grades K-8. Over the past 18 years, I have worked as a teacher and administrator, but I consider my most important job to be that of a child advocate. I will spend a lot of time with your children, getting to know their personalities, learning styles and interests. I will celebrate their successes, small and large. I will encourage them every day and let them know they are valued and have a special place in our school community.

Not only am I thrilled to begin working with your children, but also I look forward to the work we will do together. As the old African Proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” I am excited to see your children through your eyes. My goal is to ensure that all children are healthy, happy and safe, so they may learn as much as they can. This has been my philosophy since I began my career as an educator. Along with my professional accomplishments, my greatest achievement comes not professionally, but personally, as I am the mother of three beautiful children: Jamie (21), Alexis (15) and Nicholas (12). People often say I treat all children in my school as if they were my own. Please know I will work tirelessly to ensure all your children have the best possible experiences while at S.T.E.M. Academy.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides additional resources to schools that serve students who are underperforming.  In June, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) identified S.T.E.M. Academy to receive targeted support to accelerate our academic progress in reading and math and to sharpen our focus on the well-being of the whole child.  Based on the preliminary 2017 PARCC scores S.T.E.M. Academy has received a summative designation of Under Performing (in the lowest performing 5 percent of Title I eligible schools).  This means we have the highest priority for customized supports and additional resources to provide more and greater holistic support for our students.

We will continue our pathway in educating the whole child one-step at a time but with the help of the state.  We welcome this opportunity to build on the great work of our teachers and staff and look forward to including parents, families, and community partners in our efforts.

We will receive resources to address areas that need improvement.  In conjunction with those resources we will continue to work on the implementation of our district/school improvement plan goals relative to math and reading.  The building leadership team is committed to providing every teacher with the proper resources and support to implement the goals in our plan.  In order to ensure that we are providing appropriate interventions for all students, we will also take a deeper look at the NWEA student data to tailor student intervention plans.

This year’s theme is, “Re-ignite Your Passion!” Together, we will create a sense of oneness and make every effort to show each individual student, teacher and staff member how important they are to the overall success of our school. “Re-igniting Your Passion,” focuses on the whole person, including academic success, attendance, attitude, and participation in school sponsored activities. It is my hope that we will work together to provide the students of S.T.E.M. Academy the best opportunities in preparing them to be world-class citizens ready to master the challenges of the 21st Century.  I hope that you find ways to re-ignite your passion by attempting new things this year and that you challenge yourselves each and every day.

Once again, I am thankful to have the opportunity to bring all that I have experienced and learned with me “back home” to our wonderful community. As your Principal, my door is always open and I welcome your input. Please feel free to stop in or call to discuss any concerns, suggestions, or ideas. I look forward to getting to know you and your children.

We Believe…Excellence, Humanization and Pride!

Warm Regards,
Dr. Nicole Robinson
S.T.E.M. Academy Principal
