Principal's Message

Mr. James Walton

June 22, 2018

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Happy summer to you! The administration, faculty and staff of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Academy (STEM) would like to thank you for the support you have given both to your student and to the school.  I hope your summer started wonderfully for you and your family. Summer can be the best time of the year to spend quality time with family and friends and forget about school for a while.

As you enjoy this summer, please consider doing some STEM-related activities with your student during the summer break. Here are a few suggestions for you to do with your student:

  • Baking: This is one of the best ways to engage your student in using math and science in a fun way. You can work on math vocabulary, measurement skills and talk about how solids and liquids transform during baking.
  • Computer Science: Your student can develop coding skills and learn computer science principles using the free app “Scratch”. “Scratch” is a free platform for students interested in learning how to code and program interactive stories, games and animation. All that is needed is a laptop computer and your student’s creativity.
  • Turn Milk into Plastic: This is another good activity that is inexpensive to do at home. You can Google search ‘turn milk to plastic’ and explore how liquids transform into solids.

These suggestions will also help to develop your student’s critical thinking and problem solving skills. For more, you can also Google ‘summer STEM activities’ for more ideas to try this summer.

Here are some dates to remember:

  • New Student Registration: Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.  Proof of residency is required. If you are moving, or planning to transfer your child, please contact the STEM main office by or before the end of June, 2018 to request your child’s transfer.
  • First Day of School: August 20, 2018. The school day has been extended by 30 minutes for the 2018-19 school year. All students will be dismissed at 2:50 p.m. daily.

Please have a safe, enjoyable and wonderful “memories”-making summer!

We Believe…Excellence, Humanization and Pride!!

 Educationally yours,
James M. Walton, Jr.
