Principal's Message

Ms. Karen Slate

Dear New Beginnings Families,

Welcome Back to the New 2018-19 School Year! I am honored to have you as a part of the New Beginnings Learning Academy family.  To our returning parents and students, it has truly an honor to serve as the principal of NBLA, Dolton School District 149. Together with ALL stakeholders (students, staff, parents and community members), we are working hard to strengthen NBLA’s status as a unique, rigorous, and delightful learning environment. Although I hope you have had a fantastic summer and are enjoying the last few days, I trust that you also are getting excited about the school year, therefore we look forward to working with you as part of a team that is dedicated to ensuring the academic growth of our children.

Our mission at New Beginnings Learning Academy is to provide a nurturing, safe, and orderly environment in which children grow and learn to become successful members of the community. The demands and complexities of educating children are increasing day by day, therefore it is evident and very important that we work together to develop their young minds and work together to insure that they reach their full potential and become productive citizens of society. Our theme this year is "Re-ignite Your Passion!" This means we have to continue to challenge our students to grow in their academic abilities and re-ignite a fire in all stakeholders to prepare our students for 21st Century Learning.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides additional resources to schools that serve students who are underperforming.  In June, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) identified New Beginnings Learning Academy to receive comprehensive support to accelerate our academic progress in reading and math and to sharpen our focus on the well-being of the whole child.  Based on the preliminary 2017 PARCC scores New Beginnings Learning Academy has received a summative designation of Lowest Performing (in the lowest performing 5 percent of Title I eligible schools).  This means we have the highest priority for customized supports and additional resources to provide more and greater holistic support for our students.

We will continue our pathway in educating the whole child one-step at a time but with the help of the state.  We welcome this opportunity to build on the great work of our teachers and staff and look forward to including parents, families, and community partners in our efforts.

We will receive resources to address areas that need improvement. In conjunction with those resources, we will continue to work on the implementation of our district/school improvement plan goals relative to math and reading.  The building leadership team is committed to providing every teacher with the proper resources and support to implement the goals in our plan.  In order to ensure that we are providing appropriate interventions for all students, we will also take a deeper look at the NWEA student data to tailor student intervention plans.

As an educational family, we believe, with your assistance and cooperation we will be able to move forward in an effort to continue to attain the highest level of success. The gifts and talents that our students display combined with the dedication and passions of our teachers allow us to strive for excellence. By working together, students, parents/guardians, and staff can make New Beginnings Learning Academy an enjoyable and great place to learn! Hence, we are dedicated this year to getting aboard and sailing forward by working hard and moving upward to meet, achieve, and culminate the district and state academic goals. As long as we can continue to strive for excellence and work together as an extended family, we can change the mindset and continue to progress in the right direction for success. We invite you to join us in this mission of empowering our children for this upcoming school year!

In an effort to move in the right direction, we are looking to see all of our students present, on time, in uniform, and ready to start a productive 2018-2019 school year! Just a reminder the First Full Day of School is Monday, August 20, 2018, starting at 9:00 AM.   Students who arrive early to school should plan to arrive at school between 8:10 and 8:45 for breakfast. If your child rides the school bus, they will receive breakfast in the classroom. Our school day has been extended and the students will be dismissed at 3:30 pm. Our transportation services will remain at the same time for our start times and later for our stops. Please make sure you are at your location at the correct time for service. It is with great expectation that all of our students return with a big smile, a great attitude and behavior, correct uniforms, dreams and goals, with the intent to be prepared to put their best feet forward!   The continued support of All Team members is essential to ensuring we have on-going success with our goal of academic growth for every student.  Please Remember, “It Takes A Village!

We are pleased to inform you that Dolton School District 149 will continue the implementation of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), an option available to schools participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs, for 2018-2019 school year. Schools that participate in CEP are able to provide healthy breakfasts and lunches each day at no charge for all students enrolled in that CEP school. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!! We also hope that you will join us on Saturday, August 25th from 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. for our annual “Back to School” Carnival hosted at Caroline Sibley School. We look forward to seeing those bright, enthusiastic, and smiling faces eagerly ready to learn!

Throughout the year our district/school website www.sd149.org, calendars, and newsletters, will provide you with the most current information.  Please do not hesitate to contact my office if I can be of assistance to you at (708) 768-5200.
