Principal's Message

Ms. Carolyn Franklin

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! On behalf of the Caroline Sibley Administration and Staff, it is truly a pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to you as we begin another exciting school year! Whether your child is returning or new, we are glad that you are part of the Caroline Sibley Family!

Our district theme this year is “Re-ignite Your Passion”.  As the principal of Caroline Sibley School, my vision is that every teacher and parent will work together to form a strong partnership that benefits our children and helps us to establish a positive school climate.  As a staff, our goal is to meet and exceed the needs of every individual child and to foster a love of learning in our students that will carry them throughout their academic careers.  To help us accomplish this goal, we are implementing a new math series, “MyMath”, which is aligned with Common Core State Standards and the most up to date teaching and learning strategies. We will continue to use our “Journeys” reading series that was newly implemented last school year.  Over the summer, our teachers received professional development on the Next Generation Science Standards and part of our focus this school year will be to include these concepts as part of our daily teaching. We have also lengthened our school day (which will now end at 3:30 p.m.) so that extra time can be committed to targeting interventions for student improvement.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) provides additional resources to schools that serve students who are underperforming.  In June, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) identified Caroline Sibley School to receive comprehensive support to accelerate our academic progress in reading and math and to sharpen our focus on the well-being of the whole child.  Based on the preliminary 2017 PARCC scores Caroline Sibley has received a summative designation of Lowest Performing (in the lowest performing 5 percent of Title I eligible schools).  This means we have the highest priority for customized supports and additional resources to provide more and greater holistic support for our students.

We will continue our pathway in educating the whole child one-step at a time but with the help of the state.  We welcome this opportunity to build on the great work of our teachers and staff and look forward to including parents, families, and community partners in our efforts.

We will receive resources to address areas that need improvement.  In conjunction with those resources we will continue to work on the implementation of our district/school improvement plan goals relative to math and reading.  The building leadership team is committed to providing every teacher with the proper resources and support to implement the goals in our plan.  In order to ensure that we are providing appropriate interventions for all students, we will also take a deeper look at the NWEA student data to tailor student intervention plans.

As parents, you have an extremely important role in your child’s education.  Parental involvement makes a huge difference in your child’s success. I encourage you to establish a positive rapport and communication system with your child’s teacher and to stay involved with your child’s education by participating in our school and district events. Whenever parents visit our school, they will be required to show an official id. Parents are also encouraged to meet with their child’s teacher by appointment so that the teacher can set aside a time to truly focus on your need.  Our district website www.sd149.org is a valuable source of information and will help to keep you abreast of school and district information and events.

School begins on Monday, August 20th from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Students are expected to be in their school uniform consisting of a light blue shirt, navy blue pants/skirts/jumpers and dark colored shoes.  All staff members will be outside to meet and greet our students and parents on this day and to help our students get settled with their new teachers.  We also hope that you will join us on Saturday, August 25th from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. for our annual “Back to School” Carnival hosted right here at Caroline Sibley School.

Again, Welcome! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school office or a building administrator.  We are looking forward to working with each and every one of you this school year!  Together, we WILL make a difference in the lives of our children!

We Believe…Excellence, Humanization and Pride!!

Educationally Yours,

Carolyn Franklin
Principal
