Superintendent's Corner

Dr. Shelly Davis-Jones

Dear Parents and Staff:

As of January 16, 2017, SB 0550 was signed by Governor Bruce Rauner, which requires all public and private schools occupied by student in grades preschool through fifth grade to test for lead in water sources used for drinking and cooking.  All school buildings constructed before 2000 are required to be tested this year.

Dolton School District 149 is diligent about ensuring our facilities are safe and healthy for students to learn. Part of ensuring a healthy learning environment is making sure our water sources are clean and safe for consumption. On November 3, 2017, the District tested the water at all District schools, including the Middle Schools. Testing results in the STEM Academy water fountain located on the South West side of the building on the second floor identified lead levels exceeding 5 parts per billion(ppb). This fixture was immediately decommissioned and over the winter break the fixture was renovated to ensure compliance. In addition to this singular fixture, all other water faucets were also renovated. Water samples will be drawn to re-test the location to ensure it meets guidelines for appropriate lead levels.

I want to emphasize that we have clean, safe drinking water in your child’s school. The area of concern has been remediated and replaced. Additional water testing information for Dolton School District 149 can be viewed on our District website under the Current Highlights section (Results of Water Testing for Lead).

More information about lead in drinking water can be found on the EPA website at https://www.epa.gov/ground-water-and-drinking-water/basic-information-about-lead-drinking-water.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.

We Believe . . .Excellence, Humanization and Pride!

Educationally Yours,

Dr. Shelly Davis-Jones
