Superintendent's Corner

Dear Parents and Guardians,

November 15th marks the ninth official statewide observance of School Board Members Day in Illinois. In Dolton School District 149 we will honor our School Board Members on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at our regular scheduled board meeting at the Middle School located at 1650 Pulaski Road in Calumet City, Illinois at 7:30 p.m. This is an opportunity for the district, students, parents and community to thank school board members for their commitment in serving the needs of all children in our school district communities.

Board members take their positions seriously and view their roles as a way to create opportunities for all students to succeed. When it comes to public service school board members are some of the most selfless volunteers around. Serving as an elected school board member is a sacrifice! They serve without the expectation of a paycheck in a position where they act as guardians of the community’s tax dollars and its most precious resource—the children.

They are your coworkers, neighbors, parents and community stakeholders.  They are also viewed as the advocates who fight on the front-lines for quality education for all children.  School board members do more than just attend meetings.  They devote a significant amount of their own personal time to the district by attending extracurricular events to support schools and by participating in professional development opportunities to learn how to become better leaders. Many of these activities have been on weekends and during peak times during the course of the school year taking them away from time that could be spent with their own family.

Some people are quick to criticize school board members without understanding the details involved in on the decision-making process. As a result, the efforts of the local board of education often go unrecognized and unrewarded.  I want to take a moment to commend the Board of Education for their dedication and commitment to our schools, children and families! They always go above and beyond for every child in the district.  It is truly an honor and a pleasure to work with such dedicated and caring individuals!  I am thankful and grateful to work and serve with the Board of Education.

Thank you for your great work and service to the children of Dolton School District 149!

Happy School Board Recognition Day!

Educationally Yours,

Dr. Shelly Davis-Jones, Superintendent
