Superintendent's Corner

Dr. Shelly Davis-Jones

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Stakeholders,

On behalf of the Board of Education and the Dolton School District 149 Family, Welcome back to school!  We are excited about the start of the 2017-2018 school year.   Our theme for the school year is “Educating the Whole Child One Step at a Time.”  We are looking to provide new opportunities to improve the lives and educational future of every child.

I want congratulate every student who participated in our summer reading program! I truly enjoyed reading the blogs and hearing about the stories students read during summer school.  Every child who read and posted on my blog will have their name placed in a raffle at our Back to School Carnival for a chance to win some great prizes.  Please make sure your child is present in case their name is called in the raffle on Saturday, August 26th from 11:00 am-3:00 pm at Caroline Sibley School located at 1550 Sibley Boulevard in Calumet City, Illinois.

The District Leadership Team is currently reviewing our Terra Nova Data.  We apologize that we did not receive our scores in a timely manner due to extenuating circumstances out of our control.   Please allow my team and I time to analyze the data and share our plan of action.

Based on the data from the 5 Essential Schools Survey that many of you participated in last school year family engagement is an area that we want to improve upon. We continue to recognize our children need support from both the home and school in order for them to be successful.  We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. Your input and role as a collective partner is critical to helping us “Educate the Whole Child One Step at a Time.”  Please help us this school year to support your child’s educational journey by the following:

  • Make sure your child attends school on time daily
  • Encourage your child to read a few minutes daily to improve literacy skills
  • Participate in before and after school programs
  • Inform us if you need additional support to assist your child academically
  • Encourage your child to dream big and have discussions about college and career readiness
  • Support Parent University Programs
  • Participate in class and school activities throughout the school year

The first full day of school is Monday, August 21, 2017.  The middle school hours are from 8:20 a.m. until 2:20 p.m. Breakfast begins at 8:05 a.m.    Elementary school hours are from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and breakfast begins at 8:15 a.m.   Please check our website for bus schedules for middle and elementary schools.

We are looking forward to a great school year and working more closely together with each of you!

We Believe. . . Excellence, Humanization, and Pride!

Educationally yours,

Dr. Shelly Davis-Jones, Superintendent
