Board President's Message

Mrs. Darlene Gray Everett

Dear Parents/Guardians, Students and Community Stakeholders,

Welcome back on behalf of the Board of Education for Dolton School District 149.  We are excited about the opening of the 2018-2019 school year and look forward to Monday, August 20th as the first full day of school for all students. At the end of every school year, we reflect on the voices of our children through electronic surveys, letters and phone calls to find out what they liked about programs and what they want to see more of for the next school year.  The board is amazed at how intelligent our children are and we appreciate them voicing their opinions about the programs they want for their schools.

The board is in full support of the District’s Theme, “Re-Ignite Your Passion.”  Even your best work can wear you down.  Teaching is a tough job but someone must do this great work.  It our hope that everyone will begin the new school year feeling inspired and motivated to do better than last school year. It is our goal to create a climate culture that is positive and conducive for learning, focus on the safety of our children and to find talented skilled professionals to support the mental health of our students and school community.

A lot has happened over the summer as we are preparing for opening day. Dolton School District 149’s Board of Education has officially approved an Extended School Day for the 2018-2019 school year. At the January 25th board meeting, the board signed off on a schedule that extends the school day by 30-minutes each day for the district’s five elementary schools and three middle schools.  Middle School students will begin the school day next year from 8:20 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. and Elementary students will begin from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  We have added 30 minutes to the end of the school day. Our District Leadership Team has designed a plan for the extra 30-minutes for instruction creating a universal Multi-Tier System of Support in reading and math across the district. This will be in full effect on the first day of school.

We are also excited about being able to restore some half days on the calendar to afford our teachers and administrators time for professional development and school improvement plan activities. Students in the middle school half day is 8:20 am- 11:20 am and the elementary schools is 9:00 am-12:00 pm.  Principals will forward letters home in advance and phone blasts will follow to ensure all parents are fully aware. The district’s annual calendar is also available on the website.

All schools in the district will have brand new HVAC Controls to ensure all classrooms are heated during the winter and cool during the summer months. In order to have a more efficient transportation program the district has worked with First Student Transportation Company to use new technology to create the safest way to transport children to and from school.  Anyone with transportation questions may contact your child’s principal Monday through Friday between 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. The Bus stops are the same as last year.  Please check the website and your child’s school for the bus stops and times.

Please join us for our Annual Back to School Carnival Saturday August 25, 2018 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm. We want to use this event to celebrate the beginning of a new school year. Bring the whole family out for lots of food, fun, book bags and raffles.

Hair Techniques Barber Mr. Davis will be available to cut hair for any parent who has a son who attends our school district.  Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated will have a health screening to check your blood pressure and share information about diabetes.  We will have The Heart that Smiles and Preferred Dentistry to provide dental cleanings and sealants inside the building at Caroline Sibley.  Immunization forms and dental forms will be available on site.

Thank you again for the opportunity to serve and we look forward to working with every parent, every child and every stakeholder to help each child reach their highest potential!

We Believe. . . Excellence, Humanization, and Pride!
