Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning and Program's Message

Dr. Denita Scott

Dear Parents/Guardians:

In January of 2017 students in grades 2-8 were administered the Terra Nova post assessment and we have yet to receive the assessment results for this time period. The root cause of the problem was the merger of CTB/McGraw-Hill  (Terra Nova) and Data Recognition Corporation as one entity that caused delays. As of today, we were told that results will be available before the end of the school year. Due to this confusion, the district will no longer use Terra Nova and will move to the Northwest Evaluation Association/Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA-MAP) assessment for the upcoming school year. Students will be tested three times a year and results become available within 24 hours. More information can be found at https://www.nwea.org.

In addition, we are excited about the official adoption of the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series for all students in grades K-8. Specifically, Journeys for students in grades K-6 and Collections for 7-8 grade students. Both programs are designed to build confidence in problem-solving, critical thinking skills, analyzing complex text, and building skills for a life time.  Implementation of the new reading series will begin at the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

Once again, the Aim High Tutorial Program will be offered before school beginning in October of 2017. The program times for the elementary schools will run from 7:40 a.m. – 8:25 a.m. and middle school times will run from 7:15 a.m. -8:00 a.m. Parents are responsible for transportation of their child to the program.

It is our desire to continue education of the whole child by means of consistent reflection and refinement.  If questions or concerns arise at anytime, please do not hesitate to contact me at 708-868-8300.

We wish you a safe and relaxing summer!

Sincerely,
Denita B. Scott, Ed.D.
Assistant Superintendent
