Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning and Program's Message

Dr. Denita Scott

August 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!

We are excited about the continuing efforts on student learning. Let’s examine the new developments below as follows:

Textbook Adoptions

The Houghton-Mifflin Reading series was adopted for all students in grades K-8. Specifically, Journeys for grades K-6 and Collections for grades 7-8. Classroom teachers were provided with implementation training and received individualized coaching on instructional delivery. New teaching staff will be trained on August 23, 2018.

Two new math programs were adopted this year. McGraw-Hill/ My Math for students in grades K-5, McGraw-Hill/Glencoe for grade 6 and Pearson Envision for grades 7-8. Teachers launched implementation training with My Math/Glencoe on August 6th and with another session being available for those staff that were unable to attend on September 5th.  Pearson Envision training for middle school math teachers was held on August 7th.

As part of this professional development, teachers engaged in conversations about the constructivist model of learning and its impact on mathematics.  This model promotes deeper thinking and problem solving which in turn encourages the teacher to be a facilitator and co-explorer rather than a transmitter of knowledge.

Next Generation Science Standards

In the months of June and August all classroom teachers in grades K-8 participated in professional development on the new science standards. This professional development was at no cost to the district and was funded by Foundational Services through the Intermediate South Cook Service Center (ISC4).

The major focus was for teachers to gain a strong understanding of the new science framework and rigorous expectations necessary to support students in achieving scientific literacy. What is most notable is that these standards apply to Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. This interrelation empowers students to see connections into other content areas. To help facilitate implementation of the standards, teachers will receive the books; A Framework for Understanding Science Education and Next Generation Science Standards for States and By States.

Dolton School District 149 Testing Calendar

The 2018-2019 testing calendar is available on the district website under Current Highlights. One notable change is that the PARCC assessment is now the Illinois Assessment of Readiness. Accountability will still focus on the New Illinois Learning Standards incorporating the Common Core and will be administered in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

Transportation

First Student is the vendor for student transportation. If any bus concerns arise with your child, the first point of contact is the building administration. In addition, please remind your child about the appropriate bus behavior to minimize any disruptions.

All parents are required to complete a new transportation form each year. This document is available on the school’s website and in the school office.

Sincerely,
Denita B. Scott, Ed.D.
