Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning and Program's Message

Dr. Denita Scott

Greetings Parents/Guardians:

Welcome Back! We are incredibly excited to begin the 2017-2018 school year.  As an entire educational community, we will strive to be even better than before by providing exceptional learning experiences that improve the lives and future of all children.

Although the district will no longer administer the Terra Nova assessment, home reports should be disseminated in late September.  We are beginning a new era in student assessment with implementation of the Northwest Evaluation Association/Measure of Academic Progress (NWEA-MAP). Students will be assessed three times throughout the school year and results become available within 24 hours. More information is available at https://www.nwea.org.

Starting in the fall of 2017, kindergarten teachers in the state of Illinois are now required to use the Kindergarten Individual Development Survey (KIDS) to observe kindergarten development in critical learning areas within the first 40 days of school. The observations will take place during normal routines of learning and playing in the classroom. These observations will help teachers to deepen their knowledge about each child’s learning abilities.

The Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Reading Series was officially adopted for all students in grades K-8; specifically, the Journeys program for students in grades K-6 and Collections for 7-8 grade students. Both programs are designed to build confidence in problem-solving, critical thinking skills, analyzing complex text, and building skills for a life time.

The Aim High Tutorial Program will be offered before school beginning in October of 2017.  The program times for the elementary schools will run from 7:40 a.m. – 8:25 a.m. and middle school times will run from 7:15 a.m. -8:00 a.m. Parents are responsible for transportation of their child to the program.

It is our desire to continue education of the whole child by means of consistent reflection and refinement.  If questions or concerns arise, I can be reached at 708-868-8300.

Sincerely,
Denita B. Scott, Ed.D.
Assistant Superintendent
